On a Particularly Stormy Northcoast Day...

I'm lived within an hour of the coast my entire life but it's always so cold and windy that I have never felt like I live "by the beach". I have been to the coast and forgot my jacket and mittens enough times that I have learned to loath the biting winds and the runny noses.
My job took me to Cannon Beach on a particularly stormy day this fall and I thought, "Oh, big surprise, it's rainy and windy again". When I came back to the office, one of my co-workers announced that she was going to the coast that weekend to Nye Beach to sit in a Bed and Breakfast's library, drink hot cocoa, and watch the storms roll in. It all hit me at that moment that I have been resenting Oregon's coast for 25 years because it isn't warm and peaceful like the San Diego vacations to Grandmas house. But Oregon's coast is a whole different creation in a way, and one more enjoyed as it is, from an enclosed enviroment, with a hot beverage in your hand. Then the thick blanket of grey skies and the roaring waves, that you can still hear while being indoors, are like mood lighting and background music.

This has always been my favorite thing about the coast, and perhaps why I thought it was so romantic when Buttercup described Wesley as having "eyes like the sea after a storm." It's really quite lovely.

I haven't a gloomy coast, but Dee and I just painted our living room a burnt orange color and it gives me the desire to curl up into a ball with a thick blanket, good book, and hot beverage. Although this desire could also stem from having our heat set at 64... Hooray for hot beverages!

You know what....you're right. The coast is not the same animal as the beach. I wonder why we always expect it to be??
